
We are pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Michael J. Bustamante, Emilio Bacardí Moreau Chair in Cuban and Cuban-American Studies and Associate Professor of History at the University of Miami’s College of Arts and Sciences, to the new role of Director of Academic Programs for the Cuban Heritage Collection, effective March 1, 2023.
In collaboration with Amanda T. Moreno, Esperanza Bravo de Varona Chair and Director of the Collection, Dr. Bustamante will oversee existing academic/research programs at the CHC, including the Goizueta Graduate Fellowship Program, the biennial Roberto C. Goizueta Distinguished Presidential Residence Program, and the biennial New Directions in Cuban Studies Conference. With support from the Morrison Fund for Cuban Studies, Amanda and Dr. Bustamante will develop new programs, such as an annual Seminar in Cuban and Cuban Diaspora Studies, short-term travel grants for faculty and students to conduct research at the Cuban Heritage Collection, and a Cuban Diaspora Oral History Project. Dr. Bustamante will work with CHC faculty and staff to plan book talks, panels, and other public events.
This appointment serves to achieve greater integration of CHC and Cuban Studies initiatives across the university, positioning the CHC as the hub for Cuban Studies at UM more broadly.
