The Cuban Heritage Collection’s upcoming exhibition, “The Art of Propaganda: Poster Art and Political Satire in Cuba and the Diaspora,” will feature a stunning array of posters, including “Cria Cuervos” by renowned artist Eduardo Muñoz Bachs. Born in Valencia, Spain, in 1937, Bachs moved to Cuba with his family in 1941 and became one of the country’s most prolific graphic designers in the 1960s and 1970s, a period when Cuban poster art gained international acclaim. His work is characterized by stark, minimalist compositions that often utilize dark backgrounds to enhance drama and theatricality. The 1977 poster for the Spanish film “Cria Cuervos,” directed by Carlos Saura and featuring Geraldine Chaplin, exemplifies Bachs’s aesthetic. In addition to his film posters, Bachs was also known for his whimsical and colorful children’s illustrations. In celebration of the exhibition’s opening, join us on September 26th for a reception and conversation with Lincoln Cushing and Dr. Ariana Hernandez-Reguant, moderated by curator Dr. Elizabeth Cerejido.
